| Aims |
The Journal of Global Buddhism
has been established to promote the study of Buddhism's globalization
and its transcontinental interrelatedness. This aim shall be achieved
through the publication of research articles, discussions, critical
notes, bulletins, and reviews; additionally, the journal will
function as an independent research tool itself, emphasizing surveys,
the creation of databases, empirical investigations, and through
the presentation of ongoing research projects.

|
| Description |
The Journal of Global Buddhism
is a scholarly academic journal employing a blind peer review
evaluation process, and is innovative in adopting a totally electronic
mode of publication. In all respects, it functions as a traditional
scholarly journal.

|
| The Concept of
an Online Journal |
An online journal differs from
a traditional journal in that it publishes electronically as opposed
to a printed format. The Journal of Global Buddhism will also
publish material on an ongoing rather than a periodic basis, eliminating
any backlog between acceptance and publication. An online journal
is NOT the same as a newsgroup, discussion list, or bulletin board:
the Journal of Global Buddhism is none of these things and will
not function in this way.

|
| Why Publish Online? |
Online journals are a logical
development in the use of information technology. The dissemination
of information through this medium has three main advantages over
publication in the traditional manner, namely, cost, speed, and
ease of access. Other advantages of an electronic medium include
keyword searching and the use of multimedia and hypertext formats.

|
| Editorial Policy |
The editors are committed to
the widest dissemination for material published in the journal.
As well as publishing online they will also explore the possibility
for the publication of the contents of the journal from time to
time in partnership with traditional presses.

ADDITIONAL JOURNAL FEATURES
|
| Research Projects |
As noted above, the journal
will function as an independent research tool itself, emphasizing
surveys, the creation of databases, empirical investigations,
and through the presentation of ongoing research projects. The
focus of the journal's research projects will be determined by
the editorial board and/or by independent proposals submitted
by scholars working in the field.

|
| Book Reviews |
Unlike the Journal of Buddhist
Ethics, the JGB will review books only in the area of focus of
the journal. Because it is likely that the two journals will have
varying subscriber bases, it is possible that some book reviews
may be published in both journals simultaneously.

|
| Teaching Resources |
This section of the journal
will focus on resources for web-based courses on Buddhism and
Distance Education courses on Buddhism. It will provide links
to all appropriate online sources. This section will be edited
by Professor Mavis Fenn, who also serves as Book Review Editor
for the Journal of Buddhist Ethics.

|
| Global Buddhist
Communities: News and Bulletins |
This section of the journal
will offer announcements about Buddhist news throughout the world
and within individual Buddhist communities. As the journal develops,
this section will be subdivided into "areas," with each
area having its own editor. It is also anticipated that this section
of the journal will include community pages and various popular
resources.
